Speculations for future: post 370 scrapping edition

BJP government has finally scraped the article 370 on which the whole Kashmir question stands. Nationalistic ideology does not support asymmetric statements to states. States are seen small ,efficient units responding to strong center.
BJP government is clearly more confident after 2019 reelection. There is no doubt now that BJP represents majority of non-SC Hindu opinion. Ideology of assertive nationalism is resonating with large section of Indian population. Most importantly, government has no qualms in taking actions which seem to be gratifying to their core base and insulting towards opposition. Statesmanship is not their style. Their style is of warrior who plays for the gallery and who enjoys opponent being abused by spectators.
These decisions by BJP hint at times to come. I am assuming that at least for next decade, BJP will enjoy popular support unless there is severe economic downturn.

  1. If RSS and BJP core can maintain its grip like China's communist party then BJP will enjoy powers for 2-3 terms at least. Since BJP has no fundamental preference for liberal, individualistic, democratic process, it will not be miracle if more authoritative stance is seen. But, Hindu culture of magnanimity and tolerance is natural constraint on such tendencies. But absolute power can corrupt anything absolutely.
  2. Supreme court or constitution will not be able to stop India's transformation as a Hindu Israel. Majority will asserts itself, may be even at the cost of democracy. It requires leadership with no ethical conundrums, which is precisely what BJP has. Supreme court judges, academia, social organizations can all be infiltrated or demolished by an assertive political ideology and BJP will do it. India's population is BJP's key strength and it is a considerable strength. Soon, we might see Ayodhya verdict coming up BJP's way. But it is also likely that Ayodhya will drag, but gains made on Kashmir issue and Amit Shah's projection as next one are very strong.
  3. Uniform Civil Code can be a next step. I think uniform civil code favoring Hindu practices will be the version we will see.
  4. Economy is the key challenge for BJP in short term, but it is not as big a constraint as many commentators make up sometimes. BJP needs to avoid is outright recession. even if economy grinds on and nationalistic projects do not dry, BJP can continue ruling. In short run, BJP is trying to leverage housing demand to accelerate the economy. Government will try to pump up the economy though channel of credit, though the key question will be whether to use subprime borrowers to pump up the demand.
  5. Once BJP makes India a Hindu Israel, the survival challenge for BJP will begin. But that phase is still at least 10 years away. Better way to describe India is Hindu Israel ruled by single entity akin to China's communist party.
  6. So how bad will it be? Difficult to predict. When and how BJP will shade its nationalistic robes and turn to full throttle Hindu assertion will be the key point. It might not be bad if citizens given secondary status accept the fate by meek submission. The point of instability will be brought when BJP's core support group will break. Not all groups among Hindus will have hold of power.
  7. Key challenges for BJP will be how to get all major Hindu groups (caste, kinship, language based) together. One way is to weld the differences with strong nationalism. Bur regional and other fault-lines are hard to die. If there is no economic miracle, then there will be strain and envy.
  8. What happens to us as a nation? What happens to those who dissent with BJP? One thing is sure. Unlike past, where so called individual, liberal ideas were accepted by Bohemian few without social changes supporting them, in the coming time, ideas have to be built from scratch.
  9. Market, individualism, consumerism will keep penetrating the society through media and our contact with west. Culture will be the product consumed by consumers and not the force dictating their lives. Hindu symbols, Hindu traditions will be new market product. Value system will be one of market, continuous consumption and planning for next desire.
Before we condemn it just because it doesn't match with images implanted us during our education, we should take hard look at questions of human existence, its meaning and purpose. Afterall we are here because millions of social media users and voters. It is a social choice and not a trivial one. If we are denying it, what sort of act that is?

Why exit polls got it so wrong?

Results of India general elections 2024 have thrown a surprise no one saw coming. NDA has secured a majority but BJP on its own has failed to secure the majority, unlike last two general elections.                No exit poll predicted this scenario. As per exit polls, BJP was going to reach majority mark on its own and NDA was going to win about 350 seats. But BJP has won 240 seats and NDA has won 292 seats. The results seem to be beyond the confidence intervals projected for the prediction. What does that say about exit polls? There are multiple possible answers to this question. I will rule out conspiracy answers at the outset. I am not going ahead with argument that exit polls were staged to help some agents. One interesting possibility that I might want to consider is false answers from voters. Respondent’s response to exit poll enumerator can be a strategic choice if respondent thinks that revealing what she...

Ride-hailing, Driver Power, and the Contest for Surplus in the market of shared mobility in Indian cities

The February 2026 launch of Bharat Taxi marks an unusual development in India's ride-hailing market . Unlike Uber , Ola , or Rapido —owned by private entities—Bharat Taxi is a driver-owned cooperative with visible government backing. If the government's stated ambitions materialize, this represents more than simply adding competition. It signals whose power shapes how urban mobility platforms organize themselves and distribute surplus. This article examines what Bharat Taxi's emergence tells us about driver bargaining power in India's ride-hailing market—how it never disappeared, how it reasserted itself, and where it might lead. Link Drivers Were Never Fully Atomized Standard accounts of platform capitalism emphasize how apps atomize workers—turning them into isolated contractors subject to algorithmic control. In India's ride-hailing sector, this story is incomplete. Auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers have always multi-homed across multiple apps, retained t...

Haunting spectre of humid summers

3 months of the summer of 2023 have passed so far. Compared to last year, this summer has been less scorching. The temperatures in Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) were around 40℃ in March and April 2022. This year, it was only in April, temperatures rose to that uncomfortable level. March 2023 was surprisingly pleasant this time, more so because we anticipated something harsher. After the 23 rd April 2023, temperature have dropped by few degrees and most importantly it has become somewhat tolerable again. But this summer has left an indelible mark on our memory due to several deaths caused by heatstroke on 16 th April 2023 . Deaths of heatstroke is not the possibility one typically associates with MMR. We have train track deaths and reckless driving for such association. (Perhaps we add ‘mauled by stray dogs’ as well, if not now then in near future!) Those deaths reminded me of climate fiction ‘ The Ministry for the Future ’ by Kim Stanley Robinson. This novel opens with a clima...
