Steps towards Hindu Israel

Modi-2 government has put the ball in action for Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB). There is an uproar about religious nature of the bill. To be politically correct, word used in the bill is 'community' and not 'religion'. This word choice itself shows a typical RSS-BJP strategy, of means serving the end. Bill refers to Hindus in Pakistan as a community and not religion. This is contrary to manner in which word 'Hindu' is used in India. In India, Hindu is a dharma and Jains, Buddhist and Sikhs are communities, as per the Hindu nationalist terminology. But use of word 'Religion' in bill would have proven problematic. Hence, Hindus in Pakistan are termed as 'community'.
This is an inconsistency. Prosecution of communities can be applied to Ahemedia community in Pakistan. It is evident that BJP wants to make religion as a basis of bill. But to make bill a reality, they are substituting 'religion' with community.

Similarly inconsistent is absence of Sri Lanka and Myanmar from the bill. Both counties have recent viilent history of religious discrimination.

But this exclusion of Srilanka and Myanmar is not surprising. The purpose of bill is not to help refugees, of certain religion, from certain countries. The purpose of bill is to prove Muslims in India as secondary citizens. CAB is first piece of the scheme and nationwide NRC will be second. All non-Muslims who will not be able to prove their nationality will become citizens of India in NRC will become Indian nationals under CAB. So it is only Muslims who will be left without recourse.
Nationwide NRC + CAB will be used to prove Muslims as non-Indians. Only NRC will end up putting lot many others in it.
The question we must ask is what happens if this plan comes to fruition. How exactly these non-nationals be dealt with? Does RSS-BJP have annihilation of these crores of individuals in mind? Or will they be reconverted to Hinduism? And, whats the cost of this violent delights? Civil war or concentration camps?

Court is not going to stop something which has majority support and led by ruthless political masters. It is 2024 general election which can prove a turning point. May be Hindu voters, which have consolidated behind BJP, will have disillusionment and we will go back to federal coalition politics. Or promise of ethnic homogenization will prove potent over anything.

Balia suffers and Mumbai stares

More than 100 have died in Balia and Deoria district of Uttar Pradesh in last few days . These districts have experienced heatwave conditions. IMD has given orange alert warning (40℃ to 45℃) for these as well as other districts in Eastern Uttar Pradesh. For those who are aware, Kim Stanley Robinson’s Climate fiction ‘The Ministry for the Future’ opens with a stunning description of heatwave related deaths in Uttar Pradesh. What is happening now in Deoria and Balia district has uncanny resemblance to what author has imagined. In some sense, we have been made aware of what awaits us, though we have decided to bury it because it is inconvenient. Even now, these deaths are not officially attributed to heatwave. Here is what I think have happened. It is a hypothesis rather than a statement with some proof. Balia and Deoria are districts near Ganga, a large water body. Rising temperatures have caused greater evaporation of this water body leading to excessive humidity in the surround

4 years of Demonetization: How non-cash payments have fared?

Kiran Limaye, Himank Kavathekar -----------             On 8 November 2020, it will be four years to an announcement of policy of withdrawal and reissuance of high denomination currency notes, or what we popularly call ‘demonetization’. One of the stated objectives of the policy was encouraging the use of non-cash payment modes. It is generally considered that non-cash payment modes, debit and credit cards, mobile based payment mechanisms like UPI and prepaid payment instruments like mobile wallets are better than cash, for individual as well as for a society. These non-cash alternatives have less risk of theft and both ends of transactions are traced unlike cash which can be used without trace. But these non-cash modes require higher consumer involvement (for example, knowing pins and maintaining their secrecy and ability to operate smartphone beyond routine call receipt and dial) which are not acquired by section of population, mainly due to factors such as age or education. It w

Haunting spectre of humid summers

3 months of the summer of 2023 have passed so far. Compared to last year, this summer has been less scorching. The temperatures in Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) were around 40℃ in March and April 2022. This year, it was only in April, temperatures rose to that uncomfortable level. March 2023 was surprisingly pleasant this time, more so because we anticipated something harsher. After the 23 rd April 2023, temperature have dropped by few degrees and most importantly it has become somewhat tolerable again. But this summer has left an indelible mark on our memory due to several deaths caused by heatstroke on 16 th April 2023 . Deaths of heatstroke is not the possibility one typically associates with MMR. We have train track deaths and reckless driving for such association. (Perhaps we add ‘mauled by stray dogs’ as well, if not now then in near future!) Those deaths reminded me of climate fiction ‘ The Ministry for the Future ’ by Kim Stanley Robinson. This novel opens with a clima
